Scott Joplin in New York: A Ragtime Mystery

Scott Joplin in New York: A Ragtime Mystery presented by the Bowery Boys New York City History podcast.

A recent Bowery Boys podcast tells the story of Scott Joplin, the composer of ‘Maple Leaf Rag’ and ‘The Entertainer’. During his lifetime he published 44 ragtime pieces, one ragtime ballet and two operas. He was born Arkansas, moving to Sedalia. Missouri in 1894. it was in Sedalia that he published ‘Maple Leaf Rag’. In 1901 Joplin moved to St Louis, continuing to compose and publish his ragtime pieces. He arrived in New York City in 1907 with the hope of finding a publisher for his second opera, Treemonisha. In 1917 he died in a psychiatric institution in New York City and was buried in a paupers’ grave in Queens.
