This occasion occurred as part of the US visit to NZ of its ‘Great White Fleet’ in August 1908. Nearly all of the vessels that took part in the visit were built post 1900. The fleet consisted of 16 battleships and there were 20,000 men manning the vessels. President Roosevelt stated that the battleships were cheaper than war. The fleet arrived in Auckland on the 9th August 1908. Some of Auckland’s streets were decorated in commemoration for the visit.
