A photograph labelled as an image of the reception of Lord Ranfurly at the Napier Band Rotunda on Marine Parade, Napier.

The photograph is possibly taken at the time of the Governor General’s (1897-1904) visit on 30 March 1898 for which a public holiday was observed in Napier. The large number of school children visible behind the rotunda suggests that this photograph depicts the visit at this date. On this visit it is recorded that over one thousand school children attended and that Lord Ranfurly made a special address to them.

A section of the welcome sign is visible at the right of the image, presumably stretching over the street in front of the Masonic Hotel to the rotunda. The photograph appears to have been taken prior to the reception as within the rotunda dignitaries are seated yet there are still many seats to be filled at the rear. The rotunda is decorated with foliage and there are several flags decorating the rotunda and the lights surrounding it.

In the foreground at the bottom of the image several military soldiers are visible lining the street on the edge of the crowd.

Photographer, unknown.
Date, thought to be 1898
